Serial Bowl Records – SBR003
This 4-track EP surprised this reviewer, as it’s arguably the most tuneful out of all of the Serial Bowl label’s output thus far.
Easy on the ear, it by no means a pop record, no way at all. It has that post-punk vibe going and is quite refreshing after listening to the angrier side of punk for some time.
As for influences, it’s hard to say for me, but there are parts that remind me of XTC, especially ‘Harshed Out’ where I like that funky start-stop approach and tempo change.
The B-side gets a little up-beat and more ‘harsh’, with screaming minimalistic vocals on Hot Kid. Short and sweet… I like it a lot.
The EP is closed off by ‘King of the Middle of the Road’ – a great rhthymic stomper of a track.
